Chaology

Chaology no. 1
50.8 x 61 cm. black and white silver gelatine prints. 2006

This series grew from a fascination with the visual power of the photographed explosion. The forms are shaped using everyday materials such as cotton wool, talcum powder and paint. They replicate images of explosions including Hiroshima, nuclear testing, the space shuttle disaster, burning oil explosions and white phosphorus bombs. They are at once icons of destruction and yet familiar organic formations, reminiscent of clouds, tornados, flowers and liquid. ÔChaologyÕ is about the ironic beauty of these formations and the impossible frozen fragment of time that the camera is able to record.
