Martin Bardell

The Rehearsal 2009
ÒMartin Bardell creates
languid, theatrical tableaux that explore the concealed tensions of social
behaviours; each image in the series of works entitled 'Rehearsal' (2007)
suggests ambiguous narratives that remind us of the fragility of our social
environment. Combinations of protagonists from varying cultural groups are
gathered within the frame exploiting our own preconceptions. Inexplicably
iconic and arresting, the images simultaneously explore the epic and mundane.
Within the context of
the artist's supporting statement, Bardell's work suggests a foreboding that
subtly invites the viewer to consider the consequences of a breakdown in social
etiquette. In placing the players onto a theatrical 'stage' evocative of a
gallery environment, the usual backdrop of society is downplayed; a sense of
place made mysterious, no streets exist and rooms are bathed in darkness. This
saturated blackness of the backdrop and rich tones of the subjects creates a
hyper-reality laden with portent; the use of photography perfectly suited to
capturing the figures in their isolated interactions.
The artificial tension
is seductive, haunting and ultimately terrifying, a restrained yet potent
investigation into the potential perils of social interactions and the frailty
of culture and its construction.Ó
